Final Programmatic Report
Regarding: Wallace Research Foundation grant to Regional Inlet Invasive Plant Program
To: Hilary Smith, Director,
hsmith@tnc.org
From: Patty Wittmeyer, Town Clerk, Town of
1. The
purpose of the grant was to provide funding for Japanese Knotweed control
efforts in the
2. The grant project included coordination with Elizabeth Mangle of the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District along with Brendan Quirion and Hilary Smith of the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program. Some of the funds were used to treat sites that had been identified by the HCSWCD in Speculator/Lake Piseco/Wells.
3. Summary of grant’s outcomes
a. Description of partners involved and their roles:
i. Doug Johnson – volunteer coordinator and pesticide applicator – created and maintained www.noknotweed .org web site, helped coordinate volunteers and pesticide applicators, showed Avery Menz how to do treatments, wrote newspaper articles, treated some sites, helped with publicity and reports
ii.
Patty Wittmeyer and
Town of
iii. Invasive plant coordinators – identified sites, obtained permissions from property owners, showed pesticide applicators the sites, helped with fund raising

7. North Creek/North River Judy Brown and Evelyn Greene
8.
iv. Ryan Burkum, Avery Menz, Eric Menz – certified pesticide applicators
v. Doug Johnson, Patty Wittmeyer, and the invasive plant coordinators all volunteered their time, which totaled at least 100 hours
b. Number of sites identified:
i. Over 150 sites were identified with property owner permissions obtained; there were many other sites with knotweed seen, but for which property owner permission was not obtained
c. Number of sites treated
i. Ryan Burkum – treated about 90 sites
ii. Doug Johnson – treated 14 sites
iii. Avery and Eric Menz – treated over 50 sites
d. Applicator names, their role, activities, and accomplishments – see Appendix I.
i. Ryan Burkum – treated about 70 properties in Blue Mt Lake, Indian Lake, Lake Placid, and Long Lake (some properties with several sites) using 2352 ounces of Accord. Since about 2 ml are used to inject in each cane, each ounce treats about 15 canes, this would treat about 35,000 canes.
ii.
Doug Johnson – did follow-up treatment of sites in
Inlet and Town of
iii.
Avery and Eric Menz –
treated over 5o sites in
iv. The total payments to Ryan Burkum and Avery Menz were $11,430. This grant paid for part of their payments, with additional funds from donations.
e. Description of equipment or supplies purchased
i. 30 gallons of Accord were purchased $775.71
ii. Signs, marking pens, needles, injection gun parts were purchased $515.43
f. Description of how site occurrence data and treatment data was collected and stored
i. Site occurrence data and treatment data were collected by each invasive plant coordinator, and entered into an excel spreadsheet
ii. Invasive plant coordinators have agreed to help out again next year, to help coordinate treatments in future years
iii. We are hopeful that Ryan Burkum, Avery Menz, and Eric Menz will be available for treatments in future years. With them knowing the sites they’ve already treated, it will be easy for them to know exactly where to do followup treatments.
g. Assessment of treatment progress to date
i. We have made great progress this year including:
1. Treating all sites which had been treated in prior years – in some sites there was no more knotweed, and this year’s treatments should eradicate or nearly eradicate knotweed from many more of these sites (in Inlet, Blue Mt Lake, Indian Lake, and Town of Webb)
2. Treating a great many newly identified sites in Blue Mt Lake, Eagle Bay, Inlet, Forestport, Indian Lake, Lake Piseco, Lake Placid, Long Lake, North Creek, North River, and Wells
3. We estimate about 75,000 canes were treated at over 150 sites.
4. Our experience (from doing treatments for 4 years) is that over 90% of plants will be killed the first year, that nearly all the plants will be killed with two years treatments, and that a third (and sometimes 4th year treatment) are needed for large sites (several hundred to thousands of canes). This success occurs with injecting large canes. If large canes are sprayed, deformed plants come back in future years and it takes several additional years (more than 3) to eradicate the knotweed.
h. Description of other project work supported by this grant, if applicable
i. none
4. Statement of future needs or recommendations
a.
We have only gotten property owner permissions
from a small number of the sites in
b. Thus we need continued efforts from invasive plant coordinators to recruit additional invasive plant coordinators. Additional publicity will allow property owners to identify plants, give permission to treat and possibly donate, allowing us to treat in 2012.
c. For 2012, we need applicators to revisit all sites treated in 2011, since it usually takes about 3 years of treatment to eradicate the knotweed.
d. For 2012, we need applicators to identify and treat new sites.
e. In 2011, the grant funding enabled us to do much more treatments than would otherwise have been possible. While we are continuing with fund-raising efforts, grant funds have been crucial for our efforts
5. Samples of photographs of sites identified for treatment or those that received treatment
a. See website (www.noknotweed.org) for photos. If desired, we can furnish a flash drive with pictures, or make some prints.
6. Map of sites identified and sites receiving treatment
a. Appendix 1, which lists the sites that were treated.
